    Buonasera a tutti!

I present you my last effort: a short Picenian sword "Novilara type".
The use of this popular sword began in the 8th and 7th Century b.C.; it is very similar to some Illiric and Balkanic swords (1) and it represents the iron version of more ancient bronze types (2).
Technically, it's a single edged blade, with a length from 40 to 60 centimeters, a thick back and a sturdy tang. The handle was made of wood or bone, held together by iron rivets and sometimes reinforced by bronze elements (3).
For what concerns the sheath and suspension of the sword, I've rebuilt it on the statue called "Guerriero di Capestrano" (4) and on bronze rings found in Ancona, grave Colle dei Cappuccini that has been dug in 1956. Further info will be available in the "Ricostruzioni" section.
Novilara type sword is very important for the analisys of protohistorical metal working, for it's the first iron weapon sturdy enough to beat its bronze opponents, that will be replaced in a short time since then.
Therefore it's the first truly effective object made with the new metal.

Si noti la spada / Museum of Ancona: the grave of the fisherman warrior, dug in Ancona in 1956 and dating back to the half of the 7th Century. There's a Novilara type sword.

Altri esemplari esposti al Museo di Pesaro, e provenienti da Novilara: si noti la differenza delle dimensioni tra una spada e l'altra, che mi hanno indotto a farmi la mia "su misura" / Other originals shown at the Museum of Pesaro and dug at Novilara: please note the difference in dimensions, which convinced me to build my one "ad hoc" for me.

Begun the 10th of April, 2012, the forging lasted 2 times, next being the 2nd of June. 5 kilos of vegetal coal have been used in 5 hours and a half of work.

La spada a forgiatura e lucidature finite. La lucidatura ha richiesto altre 3 ore di lavoro, comprese l'affilatura e la marcatura della lama / The sword as it was after forging and polishing it. This required 3 more hours, with making the edge and engraving the mark on the blade.

La spada ed il fodero completati. Il manico è di tasso, si notino le decorazioni ad "occhi di dado" / The sword and its sheath. The handle is made of yew wood, please note the "Dice's eyes" decorations on it.

The sheath has been hardened with boiling water and salt, and then decorated with a hot iron. Decorations are a typical "Wolf's teeth" motif and a horse found on a bronze razor dating to the 8th Century b.C.

Ciò convalida l'ipotesi di Armando Cherici (5) / My hypothesis on the way a Picenian warrior would have wore his sword: by wearing it this way, he was facilitated in slashing attacks, for they were charged by merely unsheathing the sword. This validates the hypothesis of Armando Cherici (5).

    ---
This reconstruction's dimensions and weight are bigger than the original's.
This led a person to suppose I was wrong in considering the original's corrosion, thus making wrong measurements for my sword.
To be honest, the reason is another: this is a reproduction, made to be used; it's not a replica and, as the original were, it has been built to adapt itself to my stature and strength.
